I thought this a perfect occasion to introduce to my six or seven readers the concept of lunar mansions. This may be a bit knotty for those with new exposure to Vedic concepts, but if you stick with me, you will discover you understand more clearly than you think. Steve Harris has moon and sun in the lunar mansion Purva Bhadrapada, which is ‘fierce’ or Ugra, a placement symbolically indicating the Dark Night of the Soul, the state of Crossing the Abyss. This too is the object of Aghora, to go beyond the limits of night and day, to delve deeply into enduring midnight. What is spiritual death, and what happens to the state of our Soul when we desert our destiny? Interestingly, these spiritual themes seem to regularly proliferate the lyrics, and often lyrics are more expressive of the state of the Soul than any material explanation. In Taoist Magic, ‘Ziran’ is the word for allowing things to develop naturally, and the Mind flows naturally when writing. In short, Purva Bhadrapada is symbolic of both the Funeral Pyre and Death Bed, a philosophically rich, composite concept. In its existential interpretation, this cosmic stage denotes the gnosis of the death cot—the process of contemplating life lived, reflected crisply in the Russian classic the Death of Ivan Ilyich, for example, and explored thematically in the modern horror movie ‘X.; Fear of death, or better yet, fear of life, incites a deep fear of the Crone, fear of the unknown—for her leaking, withering life-force signals us to examine our own mortality. To counter this, Iron Maiden radiates the spiritual fire so often tamed, muted or scrubbed out of daily life, ensnaring our vitality to unsufferable degree. Hence, the Shakti of this lunar mansion is the ‘spiritual fire to raise up,’ through the burning flames of the funeral pyre, the light of consciousness illuming the gloaming. The band IS the power to lift millions and millions through theatre, energized enthusiasm and musical genius. When a Soul attempts to rise the planes with great force, there will be forces of an equal nature attempting to restrain its development—but it’s the resilient fire-power that exalts us beyond Death.
